“Since the purpose of a business is to create a customer, the most important
functions of a business are marketing and innovation.
EVERYTHING else is an expense.”
— Peter Drucker —
Business is all about attracting customers, providing services and making sales. How well you do any or all of these three will determine just how successful your business will be.
In the last decade, we’ve had a new, shiny tool that promised to help us do these things. The Internet, first developed as a way for researchers to share information, has exploded into a dynamic, colorful, commerce-friendly environment. It’s full of pretty websites from businesses who want desperately to attract customers, provide services, and make sales.
Unfortunately, the vast majority of websites run by small and medium sized businesses fall short of all three goals.
Mosts website designers focus on two (2) things:
- Search engine ranking (to help people find your business)
- Looking pretty (I guess to help people like your business)
Making the first page of Google is certainly a good thing. It’ll likely boost the traffic coming to your site. And once people get to your site – looking pretty sure can’t hurt.
But, your website can’t be just a “pretty customer magnet”. Once they get there, the customer has to be SOLD. They have to be convinced that your business is better than Tom, Dick, or Harriet’s business. If they showed up at your business, would you hand them pretty brochures?
Nah. What you’d probably do is:
- grab them by the hand and show them around your business so they’d understand how you deliver your goods and services – and how you do it better than the competition
- you’d let them meet some of your staff so they’ll see the kind of people they’d be dealing with
- you’d explain all the “whiz-bang” things about your products and services – things that make you and your business special
- you’d ask them about their wants and needs and explain how your business is set up to satisfy them.
- once they’ve left, whether they’ve bought anything from you or not, you’ll keep in touch with to update them on your products and services, to find out if there’s anything you and your business can do to make their lives better, to let them know they’re important to you.
Does your website do that? If you’re like most small and medium-sized businesses the answer is no.
But it could. And the cost of doing that thru the internet is $0 – or nearly so.
